In January we'll be reading Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception. Or at least parts of it!
Here is what Timea recommends that we read. She has ordered them, so we'll definitely discuss number 1; you can choose to keep reading numbers 2, 3, and 4 if you have time/interest.
1. Good enough for discussion:
The theory of the body is already a theory of perception p.203-206
and
Sense Experience p.207-242
2. Looks very interesting to me:
Space p.243-298
3. for background:
The experience of the Body and classical philosophy p. 90-98
and
The Synthesis of One's own body p. 148-153

4. for existentialists only:
Freedom p. 434-456

Merleau Ponty is really dense reading, but really rewarding for artists. Just a note, in my edition (Routledge Classics, 2002) the page numbers differ somewhat from above:
ReplyDeleteThe Theory of the Body is Already a Theory of Perception is pp. 235-239; Sense Experience pp. 240-282; Space pp. 283-347; The Experience of the Body and Classical Psychology pp. 103-111; The Synthesis of One's Own Body (a really good part) pp.171-177; and Freedom pp.504-530
